Our Story
In 1924, Jesus Marion Ortega was born in Vernal, Utah, to Cleotilde and Pablo Ortega. After serving in World War II, he married Ruby, who was born and raised in Wagon Mound, New Mexico. They settled in her hometown and began building a life together, raising eight children.
Their youngest son, Eloy C. Ortega, was born with medical complications that required specialized care. The family relocated to Socorro, New Mexico, where he received treatment at Carrie Tingley Hospital. Around this time, Marion began working for Suburban Propane, where he gained valuable experience in the propane industry.
In 1973, Marion and Ruby started their own business, Ortega’s Propane Service Inc. What began as a modest family operation quickly grew into a thriving, long-standing company built on a foundation of customer satisfaction and personalized, affordable service.
The Ortega family’s dedication to their business became a lasting tradition, with many members contributing over the years. Eloy became a central figure in the business. He was hardworking, compassionate, and honest. Despite his disabilities, nothing slowed his determination. His commitment played a major role in expanding the company and building its reputation.
In 1979, Eloy married Sadie, and together they supported the growth of the company while raising two sons, Eloy J. Ortega and Estevan Ortega, both of whom later joined the family business and continued the tradition.
When Eloy passed away in 2022, he left the company in the hands of his wife, children, and grandchildren. He left behind more than just a business, he left a meaningful impact that touched the lives of many. Today, more than 50 years later, Ortega’s Propane Service remains a locally owned and operated family business, built on the same values that started it all.
